Pretty Boy

Pretty Boy

Pretty Boy

It was twenty two years ago when Rita Guillam was out watering her plants and noticed a litter of kittens gamboling about in her neighbor’s yard across the street.  Worried that they might spill into the street and get hurt, Rita hurried over to tell her neighbor that they’d gotten out. While she was there, her neighbor mentioned that he was looking to find homes for the little kitties. Glancing over the litter Rita spotted a kitten that sang to her heart. She pointed to him immediately exclaiming, “Ooooo! I’ll take this one!” She brought him right home and promptly named him “Pretty Boy” because he was just so beautiful to her.

Rita took excellent care of Pretty Boy. She created a space for him and her other cats on her counter so they could look out the window and watch the passersby. He enjoyed being brushed so she would lovingly brush him often. He adored batting at balls so she made sure he had a steady supply for his enjoyment. Rita also arranged for someone to always be watching over him and her other animals.

“I used to have my own beauty shop,” shared Rita, “and I was gone a lot during the day, so my sister would take care of my kitties for me while I was working. Although Pretty Boy didn’t like anyone but me and my sister, he’d run and hide whenever anyone else came in, he still had a beautiful temperament.” One of her favorite games to play with him was called “Tick Tock.” Rita would bend over, lift up Pretty Boy with both of her hands, and swing him gently back and forth, saying, “Tick, tock. Tick tock.” He loved the attention and he loved Rita, too.

That love may never have been more apparent than when Rita had an accident and broke both of her arms and some of her ribs. Complications arose and one of Rita’s arms needed extra attention to help it straighten and heal properly. Her doctor suggested that she carry a paint can around with that particular arm to help strengthen it.

Rita had a very difficult time trying to get her arm straight, but Pretty Boy came to Rita’s rescue. “This story is as true as can be,” marveled Rita. “One night Pretty Boy jumped up on the bed with me and meowed and meowed at me. I said, ‘What do you want, Pretty Boy?’ and at that moment I put my arm down. Pretty Boy came over and lay on it and stayed there for an hour. Every night after that for a week, he’d come to me at nine o’clock and lay on my arm until ten o’clock. I’ll never know how he knew how to come at exactly the same time and stay for exactly an hour, but I’ll tell you at the end of that week, my arm had straightened. I think the weight and warmth of his body helped heal me.”

When Pretty Boy started having some troubles with his mouth, Rita didn’t hesitate to call Dr. Qadeer at the Santa Ana Veterinary Hospital. When she brought him in Dr. Qadeer discovered that Pretty Boy would need to have some teeth pulled. Rita asked him how much it would cost her and was dismayed to learn the amount. She knew there was no way she could afford the treatment. Dr. Qadeer told Rita about the Angel Fund and assured her that the remainder of the payment for Pretty Boy’s treatment would be taken care of.

Pretty Boy came through the surgery beautifully, but he was a twenty two year old cat at that point. He went on to live happily for another three months but then passed away. Rita is profoundly grateful she got to have that extra time with him.

“He was a wonderful kitty,” she said. “The Angel Fund and Dr. Qadeer helped me to have extra time with him and that meant the world to me.”
